Around the Hobby

There was other news in August. All of it got buried by the Cooper Flagg Rookie Debut Patch Auto.

The bounties started before Chrome Update Basketball even hit shelves. The Dallas Mavericks offered 32 years of season tickets to whoever pulled it. Ken Goldin offered a $1.5 million cash advance. And Alt did something we’ve never seen before. They auctioned the card without any agreement to sell it, just to show the owner what their platform could do.

None of it was enough.

Fanatics came in aggressive and kept the card in-house, adding it to their September Premier Auction along with the Dylan Harper and Kon Knueppel RDPAs. The terms of that negotiation stayed private.

So Fanatics made the card. And now Fanatics is selling the card. We’re not surprised.

This is exactly what they were describing back in May at the Topps Industry Conference when they talked about streamlining the whole redemption process.

August also saw Fanatics deliver on another promise from that same conference. Topps Instant Packs. Released alongside 2025-26 Topps Chrome Black Basketball, collectors could buy individual packs on Fanatics Collect. The experience is fully digital, but you're still pulling physical cards that live in the Fanatics Vault.

We bought a couple packs and, honestly, we’re kind of here for it.

Instant Packs give collectors a way into a premium release without buying a full box. Keeping the whole thing inside the Fanatics ecosystem also stops scalpers from buying up inventory and doubling the price overnight.

Where it needs work is the odds disclosure. These shouldn’t sit separate from the regular odds sheet. Especially when you can pull the same parallels and case hits out of both.

Baseball

With the final month of the season here, teams are locked in on the playoffs. Collectors? We’re watching the MVP race.

Yordan Alvarez has the AL all but wrapped up. The NL has been neck and neck between reigning MVP Shohei Ohtani and Cubs superstar Pete Crow-Armstrong. After the August Crow-Armstrong just put together, if you participate in the Topps Chrome MVP buyback program, you might want to start getting those PCA cards in order.

His rookie auto is already up 400% since Opening Day. There's room for it to keep climbing.

Going the other direction, and just as surprising, is Cal Raleigh.

A year after belting 60 home runs, he's hitting .171 with only 20 to his name. This is starting to feel like more than a slump for the Big Dumper, and collectors are heading for the exits. His rookie refractor is down almost 60% on the year.

Is this the end of the line for Raleigh collectors, or the buying window of the year? When the season wraps, expect Collector's Case Studies on both of these guys.

Basketball

We’re in the quiet months of NBA news. Klay Thompson got bought out by the Mavs and is headed to Miami. Cleveland landed Peyton Watson in a five-team trade, adding the wing defense a Donovan Mitchell and James Harden core badly needed.

The bigger story is in Los Angeles. The Lakers just sold for $12.5 billion, and Luka Dončić cards have been basically flat for three months running. If new ownership commits to building a real contender around him, this might be as good a buying window as we get on a top-five player.

Football

T-minus nine days to kickoff.

August gave us training camp and preseason answers to some of the biggest questions collectors carried through the offseason.

Kyler Murray did, in fact, take the QB1 job from JJ McCarthy in Minnesota. Since that announcement landed on 8/11, their Silver Prizms have gone in opposite directions.

Murray is up a respectable 23%. McCarthy has dropped 52%.

Preseason doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme. But if you’re a rookie QB and you throw a few picks, the hobby gets shaky fast. Fernando Mendoza, the cover man for 2026 Topps Flagship Football, did exactly that.

The cards haven't been out long and the drop is already steep. When the parallels start free-falling too, that's a sign that this isn’t just the hype of a brand new release fading away.

He’s spent the whole season proving to fans on the North Side that the first half of 2025 wasn’t a fluke. He’s putting it all out there. He’s paired up a 30 home run, 30 stolen base season with Platinum Glove-level defense and some of the most clutch at-bats we’ve seen from anyone this year. It’s truly electric.

We’ve been quietly stocking up on some 2024 wax for the last couple of months, holding some, but ripping too in the hopes that we pull something of PCA’s. While we’ve mostly stuck to flagship releases, we want to know if we should open our wallets up a little more and start scooping up one of the most liquid releases of that year.

Let’s rip in.

2024 Topps Chrome Baseball

Since it’s release in July of 2024, it feels like there’s been a constant cycle of which rookies in the 300 card base checklist are the the ones people want the most. When Chrome was first released, collectors were salivating over Elly de la Cruz and the Jacksons (Holliday, Chourio, and Merrill). Then, when 2025 rolled around, all four of those guys were old news as everyone jumped on board the Yoshinobu Yamamoto hype train. Now, in 2026, it's PCA. (Remember that Paul Skenes was a later call up that year and only surfaced in Topps Update releases.)

It’s the reason why we’re bullish on the entire 2024 baseball release lineup. Sure, we’re shooting for PCA right now. But with all those other rookies on the checklist, the floor is nice and high too.

Finally passing Shohei as the NL MVP frontrunner has done nicely for Pete’s Chrome card market. A PSA 10 of his base card is selling for $298. His refractor? $425. And don’t forget his rookie auto. Currently selling upwards of $1,875.

The good news is that most of the PCA cards are spread across every format of this product. The bad? A quick search online will show you that a lot of Pete’s Superfractors have already been pulled.

But we’re realists here at The Hobby Wire. We operate under the assumption that big hits like that are out of our reach anyway. So let’s dive into the odds. Is there still any value in 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball, even though prices have mostly doubled since release?

In our Wax Watch, we were up front about our feelings on this 2026 NFL Draft class. We don't have high hopes for this crop. We still called 2026 Topps Flagship Football a tentative rip.

We snagged two Hobby Boxes when preorders went live. From there, the more information that came out about the release, the more uneasy we got about our choice of format.

First we found out that Hobby Boxes only averaged one numbered base parallel per box.

Yikes.

Then our Wax Value Index gave us a sliver of hope. Hobby looked like the best route to the top tier rookie chases.

Well, we’ve got the cards in hand now. Were we right to have our doubts about this massive release?

Base

The design is nothing new. We’ve already seen this jersey stitching in baseball and expect to see it for the NBA later this year. We’re still in the camp that wishes Topps would build three different base designs for the three different sports. We like it. We just don’t want to see it over and over again all year. At least they made an effort to match the jersey pattern to the look of a football jersey.

The photo selection is solid too. In baseball, it seemed like Topps wanted to bring the cards to life with athletes constantly popping outside the boundaries of the card border. For football, they’ve taken a much more cinematic approach.

This Mason Taylor base card looks like a still from a movie.

Quality control on the base is top tier. Sharp corners, crisp edges, everything nicely centered. It's on par with Series Two Baseball, which is probably the best base card QC we've seen all year. Good to know for grading purposes. Though with the print runs on modern flagship, we'll admit we're not looking to grade base cards any time soon.

Verdict: A — Excellent photography paired with some of the best QC of the year.

Inserts

The insert lineup is largely a repeat of what we’ve seen from this year’s flagship sets. You got your All-Topps Team, your 1991 35th Anniversary cards. They even brought over Big Ticket Players, Greatest Hits, and Profiles.

Greatest Hits is a missed opportunity. In baseball, it was a showcase of last season’s clutch at-bats. In football, it should have been a tribute to last year’s hardest hitting defensive stars. Just our opinion.

We got lucky on this rip and pulled a Divisional Dominance insert. At 1:244 odds, it’s a case hit. Nice foil finish, high energy design, and we’d be lying if we said we weren’t at least a little disappointed. Inserts built around game scores typically don’t hold value. Making one a case hit seems a little silly.

Insert QC was good overall. Just like Series One Baseball, the edges on All-Topps Team cards can be tricky because of the black borders. Every other insert we pulled looked clean.

Verdict: B — Not much new here. And not much that’s football specific.

Parallels

We’re not going to sugar coat this one. The parallels disappointed us.

Start with the good. The golds, numbered to 2026, look great. We pulled a couple and there wasn’t a single quality issue to find. The numbered autos (see the hits below) came out clean and crisp.

It’s the Rainbow Foils where this falls apart. The color is vibrant. The condition isn’t.

You see a sliver of orange in the pack and everything speeds up. Then you see it’s Christian McCaffrey, numbered to 25, and you start running the math on what it might sell for. Then you see the bottom right corner.

Our biggest hit of the rip came out of that pack with a bent corner. It was the only card in the pack with that damage, so it had to have happened during printing or collation. It isn’t enough damage for Topps to replace the card. So we’re just sort of stuck.

Our second Rainbow Foil, a Green Ed Oliver /99, had peeling edges everywhere. If it were a bigger name, we’d send it back. But this is a $5 card on a good day. Not worth a 13ish week turnaround.

We’ve ripped a lot of wax this year. Parallel QC has never been the thing we’ve had to write about. Flagship Football changed that.

And the issue isn’t how many cards came back with defects. It’s which ones. Both of the cards we most wanted out of these boxes came out damaged. Think about what that means if you’re the one who pulls a Red Rainbow Foil of Fernando Mendoza and the edges are peeling. Two boxes isn’t a sample. It’s still enough to give us pause.

Verdict: D — The defects landed exactly where they hurt most.

Two boxes is enough to spot a pattern. Not enough to confirm one. That said, a few things jumped out once we cracked these open.

There was never more than one notable card per pack. Every pack gave us an insert, or a parallel, or the auto. Some packs gave us nothing at all.

Of the 40 packs we opened, 11 held nothing but base cards. That’s not new to flagship. We had the same experience ripping Flagship Baseball all year long, and our thoughts haven’t changed. The fun gets sucked out of a hobby box when more than a quarter of the packs are dead.

Hit placement had some variance. Our two autos landed in different quadrants. But the bigger takeaway is that the bottom half of the hobby box is where the money is.

Every numbered parallel and every auto came out of quadrants 3 and 4, with quadrant 3 holding the bulk in both boxes. The top half gave up a single Rainbow Foil in packs 1 and 2 of each box and nothing else worth writing down. Base and common inserts the rest of the way.

Collation patterns like this aren’t new. We find something like this in most releases. But if we can find it, so can everyone else. All the more reason we keep saying it.

Do not buy loose hobby packs unless you get to pick the pack yourself.

Final Thoughts

We were right to be uneasy. Just not for the reasons we thought.

Our doubts going in were about the class, and holding the cards hasn’t swayed us the other way. We just don’t see a lot to chase in this crop.

But the class isn’t what soured this rip. That happened the second time we fanned out a pack and found nothing but base. Here we go again.

Here’s the part we want Topps to pay attention to.

Two Hobby Boxes ran us around what a single Jumbo would have cost at preorder. That Jumbo would have left us a few cards shy of the base set and guaranteed an auto, a relic, and three numbered parallels. Our two Hobby Boxes came back with two autos, four numbered parallels, a 1:244 case hit insert, and an orange parallel that shows up once every 120,000 packs. We beat the Jumbo.

At this point, we’d still take the Jumbo.

The Jumbo’s floor is guaranteed and ours wasn’t. Every Jumbo pack puts something in your hand, and 11 of our 40 packs held nothing but base. When a box outperforms its own odds and still feels this thin, the odds aren’t what’s broken.

So did our Wax Value Index steer us wrong? Not exactly. Hobby Boxes still give you the best technical shot at the top tier rookie chases. But odds are only half the equation, and we aren’t sure the floor here justifies taking a shot at the ceiling.

These empty packs aren’t just a Flagship Football problem. This is the third flagship Hobby Box this year that’s left us cold, and we’ve been saying it since February. Series One gave us long stretches of base and common inserts. Series Two did it again in June. Now Flagship Football. Three products, two sports, more than a quarter of the packs coming up empty every time. Topps doesn’t publish print runs, so we’re guessing right alongside you on why.

The fix isn’t much. A couple more inserts per box, a few more unnumbered parallels, and none of it cuts into anything scarce. This was their idea in the first place. When Fanatics and Topps started shrinking pack counts, the reasoning we got was that they were trimming the fluff so every pack would feel like it carried something. A few years later, that goal seems to have gotten lost. One or two nothing packs in a box is fine. Eleven is ridiculous.

The QC is a separate conversation and a shorter one. Rainbow Foil condition has never been something we’ve had to write about this year. Flagship Football is the first. We’re hoping it’s one bad run, and we’ll be watching the next flagship release to find out.

For those still deciding on which format to buy, think about this. The window to get Hobby Boxes at preorder pricing is closed. You’re looking at $250 on the secondary market for a format that came up empty in a quarter of its packs and dinged two of the four cards we cared about. The Fanatics Value Box is still $30 on the Fanatics website. Sit with that for a second before you click anything.

If you happen to be sitting on a Hobby Box or two, flip them. At $250 the odds aren’t in your favor and somebody else will gladly take the shot. The Jumbo still has our attention for future releases.

Our product verdict hasn’t moved. One format underperforming isn’t enough to steer us off entirely. There’s only one Flagship Football release. If you want to collect these rookies without breaking the bank, this is still the product to do it in. We’d just do it out of a Fanatics Value Box.

We’re stripping the Hobby Box as a Co-MVF, which leaves the Fanatics Value Box standing on its own. Same print run, same QC risk, a whole lot less money on the table. We’ve already got a couple on the way and we’ll run a short update when they land. If those come back as thin as this, we’re moving the verdict to singles only.

Final Verdict: Tentative Rip

What the Numbers Say

We didn't need to squint to see it. Secondary market prices have already moved where the value lives.

The cost of a Hobby Box has nearly doubled. The cost of a Jumbo Hobby has more than doubled. And a whole lot of green has migrated elsewhere on the Index.

One Small Note

If you look at the odds sheet, you'll see a Sam's Club Exclusive Box listed. We chose to cut it. That box is essentially a Super Box with different exclusives. Both share the same bulk packs. So whenever we talk about Super Box Bulk Packs below, that includes what you'll find at Sam's Club.

Base Card Parallels

Base parallels showed up all over this odds sheet. Duplicated, then listed again by category: veterans, combo cards, rookies. We're treating base cards as one group here. If you want the deeper split, we built a separate tab in the Index for it.

If you’re hunting non-exclusive base parallels, look no further than the Fanatics Boxes landing in a couple of weeks. It’s a clean sweep of green across the board, with Fat Packs and Jumbo Hobby right behind them.

Seeing Jumbo Hobby in the green at all is the real surprise. Their dollar-per-pack usually sends expected spend on base parallels through the roof. The 3x numbered parallel guarantee is what moves the needle.

Then there’s the Super Box Bulk Packs, running a full Jekyll and Hyde routine. They have zero shot at most of the non-exclusive base parallels. No Golds, no Independence Days, no Foilfractors. But they hold one of the most coveted cards in the product, and there’s no better place to pull it.

Golden Mirror Image Variations come out of Super Box Bulk Packs at an expected spend of almost half the next best format, the Fat Pack. If you’re chasing those, stay away from hobby entirely. You’d be looking at roughly 7x the spend for the same card.

Where hobby formats do earn their price is the Foilfractors, and that’s by design. Topps made sure those 1/1s only come out of Hobby and Jumbo. Nothing else.

We hate when Topps keeps all the goodies behind the most expensive formats. It would have been nice to see retail give us a shot at them too. Especially in what’s supposed to be the most accessible product each year.

Inserts

Insert value leans squarely retail. The Fanatics Box takes the prize again, with Fat Packs and Hangers not far behind. If inserts are your thing, hobby formats are the ones to skip, with Jumbo the worst of the bunch and Hobby right behind it.

Super Boxes fall out of favor here too, though you at least keep a shot at some parallels.

The caveat is the Touchdown! SSP. Topps has been advertising it hard, and it lives in Hobby and Jumbo only. If that’s the card you want, you have to pay up for a chance at it.

Autos & Relics

Autos and relics spread out evenly in Flagship Football this year, which caught us off guard. This is the category hobby formats usually own outright in a flagship release.

Hobby and Jumbo still hold the best value on parallels of each autograph type. But the base versions come out of a format we haven’t had to mention yet. The Walmart Exclusive Mega Box sits right behind both hobby formats overall, and it’s the format to get if you’re chasing a Real One Auto. On parallels, it’s neck and neck with hobby.

Standard relics like NFL Materials and their parallels are better found in retail Value Boxes and Mega Boxes. And while Fat Packs are limited in what relics you can pull, they do hold the best value for the 1991 Rookie Relics.

Here’s the kicker. That retail wall of green can be deceptive. Split these cards by veterans and rookies and hobby formats reign supreme again.

Walmart Megas hold up for any auto, rookies included. Everywhere else in retail, you’re most likely pulling veteran stuff.

The format to avoid outright is the Fanatics Box. Autos and relics aren’t impossible there, but that wall of red and yellow running all the way to the bottom of the Index doesn’t inspire much confidence.

The odds stay fixed. The market doesn’t.

Most Valuable Format?

Our original thought would that this would be a good product for Hanger Boxes. After crunching the numbers, that’s not the case at all (though we do still love our Diamante Foils).

What we found instead is that the hits are sprinkled around all formats. But the two biggest things that carry a flagship release (the rookie autos and SSP Inserts), more or less lean towards hobby.

Generally, we pick our Most Valuable Format based on which format delivers the best value across the most categories. That test breaks on 2026 Flagship Football. Here, if a format is great at pulling one card, it's a wasteland for everything else.

Fanatics Boxes are by far the best for base parallels and inserts, and they’re terrible for Golden Mirrors or autos. Two of the biggest chases in the checklist. Walmart Megas are the mirror image, an absolute beast for autos and a dud everywhere else. Hobby Boxes are the play for rookies and not much of a fun rip past that.

It really forces us to consider how we define the most valuable format.

Is the most valuable format the one that gets you the most cards, or the one that gets you the card? This year's Hobby Box is bad at nearly everything and still holds the best shot at Rookie Autos.

Our verdict hasn’t changed. We’re tentatively ripping some flagship, because our belief in the 2026 NFL Rookie Class is shaky at best.

The value is spread out far enough with 2026 Topps Flagship Football that the only fair call is Co-MVPs.

We previously reported that it was impossible to pull relics out of fat packs of 2026 Topps Flagship Football. That statement was incorrect.

While fat packs are limited in what relics can be pulled out of them, there is still a variety that can be. Generally the relic value of fat packs is pretty mid. There are still better formats to buy if you’re hunting relics.

It was pretty shocking on draft night to see the Rams take a QB with the 13th overall pick. Matthew Stafford just won the MVP, for crying out loud. We get why they did it. The Rams need to start thinking about life after Stafford hangs it up, and they liked Simpson enough to pick him even though he’ll be riding the bench all season. Maybe a couple more after that.

The thing is, that actually puts Simpson in great company. Steve Young. Philip Rivers. Aaron Rodgers. Tom Brady. All of them sat a full season or more before they got the keys. Maybe the Rams are onto something here.

As a football fan, it’s brutal watching your team draft their QB of the future only to let him collect dust. But as a collector? That’s exactly when everyone else is throwing money at rookies who are actually getting playing time. Nobody’s paying attention to the guy holding the clipboard.

So we’re pulling receipts. A couple of past QBs, tracked from their first seasons on the bench to the moment they got put under center. Is there a good window to buy? Or is this more of an indicator to stay away?

Football season is just around the corner. And with it, a new crop of rookies for us to collect.

Now that they’ve regained control of the NFL license, we got a tease of what Topps can do with 2025 Topps Chrome. 2026 marks their first full season producing football cards in eleven years. And it all starts with Flagship.

If you collect baseball or basketball, you already know what to expect here. Flagship is one of Topps’ most accessible releases. They print it to the moon so anybody who wants it can get it. The product usually mixes old and new, from short printed rookies on the original 1957 design to an insane parallel rainbow on the modern side.

Topps has been making football cards all the way back to the mid-1950s, and they made it a point to remind us of that legacy this year. Flagship carries a 400 card base checklist stacked with veterans, future stars, team cards, combo cards, and (of course) rookies.

Chase Cards to Know

The biggest chase coming out of the last few years of flagship, across every sport, has to be the Golden Mirror Image Variations. Tough pulls, easy to spot by their golden backs. They’re usually among the most valuable hits in the product, in price tag and in liquidity.

Exclusive to Football is the new Touchdown! SSP insert. Cool looking cards, presumably printed on foilboard, with a clean comic-strip design. But it’s very derivative of past Panini inserts. Call it the love child of Marvels and My House!

Flagship Football also has Autographed Rookie Patch Cards to pull. From what we’ve seen of the design, they have a very premium feel, on card autos and a look ripped straight out of Immaculate or National Treasures. One of these with a top rookie should net you a pretty penny.

The case hits collectors know from the other sports are here too. All Kings makes the jump. So do the Rookie Variations, printed on the first card design Topps ever made for the sport, which in football means 1957.

These are the rookies to watch in this year’s checklist.

Fernando Mendoza, QB - Las Vegas Raiders
2025 NCAA Stats: 3,535 Pass Yards • 41 TDs • 72% Completion Rate
The Heisman winner, the national champion, and the first overall pick. Mendoza is a pocket passer who wins with timing, anticipation, and processing speed rather than raw velocity. The problem shows up when the pocket breaks. Maybe he picks up a thing or two from Kirk Cousins while he sits as the Raiders QB2 to start the season.

Jeremiyah Love, RB - Arizona Cardinals
2025 NCAA Stats: 1,372 Rush Yards • 18 TDs • 6.9 Yards per Attempt
Love is explosive, with real straight-line speed, short-area burst, and contact balance that keeps him falling forward. What he can't control is how crowded the Arizona backfield already is with James Conner, Tyler Allgeier, and Trey Benson. Starting the season with a high ankle sprain gives the Cardinals one more reason to bring him along slowly.

Carnell Tate, WR - Tennessee Titans
2025 NCAA Stats: 875 Rec Yards • 9 TDs • 17.2 Yards per Reception
Tate is a crafty route runner with a large catch radius and elite body control. He led the Big Ten in contested-catch touchdowns, and that's the trait that travels best to NFL coverage. He's not the fastest player on the field, and he never hit 1,000 yards in a college season. But if he builds a connection with Cam Ward, that's a nasty duo in the AFC South.

Jordyn Tyson, WR - New Orleans Saints
2025 NCAA Stats: 711 Rec Yards • 8 TDs • 11.7 Yards per Reception
Tyson separates early, battles at the catch point, and has legitimate yards-after-catch juice without elite vertical speed. Durability is the issue. He's already expected to miss roughly two months with a hamstring injury, per NFL Network, which puts him on an injured reserve track into October.

Ty Simpson, QB - Los Angeles Rams
2025 NCAA Stats: 3,567 Pass Yards • 28 TDs • 64.5% completion rate
One of draft day’s biggest surprises, Simpson is a mechanical marvel with flawless footwork, elite red zone ball placement, and the processing to work a receiver’s leverage. The arm talent is the catch, and scouts have flagged underthrown verticals and soft tosses between the numbers. The Rams will more than likely give Simpson the Jordan Love treatment with last season’s MVP in front of him on the depth chart. That could make for a great buying opportunity down the road.

Not all boxes are created equal, especially at these price points. Here, we break down the formats available for this release, how many cards come in a box, and the resulting $/card. For hobby formats we use the secondary market price, since that's what you'll actually pay to guarantee yourself a box the day before release. Retail formats are listed at MSRP.

For the most part, the price is what we’d typically expect for Flagship. Secondary market prices have pushed the Jumbo box outside of our typical <$1/card threshold for paper stock cards, but not by much.

What’s much more alarming is what we’re seeing in the guarantees. Topps cut Jumbo from two relics down to one this year. We didn’t lose sleep over that, since the piece that disappeared was a manufactured relic rather than anything tied to an actual player. But only one numbered card coming out of Hobby feels extremely light. This could be a sign of how much Topps is actually printing this year. More importantly, the fun factor drops real quick when you’re ripping through 20 packs of mostly base. Flagship releases have felt this way all year. It would be nice to turn that around here.

🎯 Verdict

At The Hobby Wire, we like to keep it simple.

• Rip → The checklist, price, and excitement all line up. Bust down the door.

• Flip → Solid class, but prices are too high to rip comfortably. Buy singles on the players you want. For wax, grab a box or two to sit on and sell in a year or two once the rookie class starts to prove itself.

• Skip → Junk Wax. Hard pass. Overpriced, overproduced, or saddled with a weak class.

So here’s the thing about the 2026 NFL Draft class. It’s not looking great.

The strongest pick in this draft by a wide margin was Fernando Mendoza. His last season at Indiana showed real potential. After him, it’s more of a crapshoot.

The tell was draft night. Positional value went out the window fast. When teams stop filling holes and start taking best available, that’s a red flag in football.

Look at Arizona. What they needed was help in the secondary and a quarterback. Taking Jeremiyah Love with an RB room that already had James Conner, Tyler Allgeier, and Trey Benson signals slim pickings where it mattered. Half the league ran some version of the same play. That’s real cause for concern.

On the other hand, Flagship is the first shot anybody gets at this class, and gut calls have a way of aging badly. If Jeremiyah Love turns into the next Derrick Henry, or Ty Simpson starts racking up rings, we don’t want to be the ones who sat it out completely. We think that’s unlikely. We’ve also seen crazier things happen.

So we’re not opposed to taking a flyer this early in the release calendar. Flagship provides cheap exposure, early, on a product that lands when you can still flip the rookies who come out hot in the first couple of weeks. For a class we’ve got a feeling will be particularly mid, it’s not going to get any better than that.

Now, where to spend it.

We preordered two hobby boxes, and the regret is starting to set in. One guaranteed numbered base parallel feels weak even at the $119.99 we locked in, and that window closed a month ago.

At the $279.99 MSRP, Jumbo looks fine with its slew of guarantees. The problem is the window we have to get it at that price. The Fanatics app drop closing in the next day is most likely the last shot at that number, and the secondary market already has it north of $400. That’s near what we used to pay for Panini hobby boxes and we’re not looking to go back to that. Especially with this rookie class.

So our eyes start to turn to retail. The dollar per card drops far enough that chasing a 400 card base set stops feeling like a money pit.

With this release, any retail format can do that job. So we needed a tiebreaker. We looked at whose exclusive parallels have held their market value since release. That narrowed it to two, the Fanatics Value Box and the Hanger Box.

Topps Foilboard has been the more volatile of the pair. Diamante remained consistent. So we’re giving hangers the nod, and it helps that you can get your hands on one this week. The Fanatics Value Box doesn’t ship until September 4.

We’re giving 2026 the benefit of the doubt… for now.

We hope we’re wrong and a few of these guys turn into franchise cornerstones. But we learned a long time ago to go with our gut. It’s saved us a lot of money.

For the last three weeks, it feels like every other ad in our feed is for Packz or Rips by Triumph.

2026 is bringing in a wave of new companies offering what’s known as “Digital Pack Openings.”

The concept isn't new. For years, collectors have been able to purchase graded card repacks from their LCS or from vendors at a card show, all for the chance to hit the chase card that's been inserted into the supply. Breakers have been offering this for a while now too.

What’s new is how streamlined it’s become.

The whole thing has boiled down to an app on your phone, no trip to the hobby shop, no live stream, no sitting through forty other spots waiting for yours to come up, just flashy visuals revealing a card you've most likely overpaid for.

Now the big players are moving in. Fanatics launched Instant Rips on Fanatics Live last spring, and GameStop joined the party more recently with their Power Packs.

So we spent $150 to find out how these things actually work. It’s always good to know the rules before you play the game.

Let’s rip in.

The Sales Pitch

Whatever app you're using, the premise is the same. You scroll through a vast list of digital packs with prices ranging from the price of lunch into the thousands.

Click on a pack and you’ll typically see all the chase cards laid out in a menu. Like what you see? Buy the pack and take your shot. You get a short rip animation, then the big reveal.

What the menu doesn’t always show you, at least easily, are the odds.

On Courtyard, we had to click a dropdown menu nowhere near the card menu to find the odds and the average cost of the cards in the pool. On some of these apps, your shot at the chase cards is less than 1%.

Don’t like what you pulled? No problem. You can sell the card back to the company for 80-90% of the comp. Everything else sits in a vault, and from there you can list your cards on the app’s marketplace or have it shipped directly to your door.

Some of these companies also advertise that, over time, the long-term average value of your pulls will converge on the price of the pack. Meaning the more packs you buy, the more likely you are to break even.

We’ll come back to that.

Right now, though, this sounds like a pretty good deal, right? You put in $100 for a guaranteed physical card that could be worth more than what you paid. And if it isn’t, or you just don’t like it, they’ll buy it back so you don’t eat the whole loss.

That’s the pitch. So we tried it.

Our Two Packs

We bought one $100 baseball pack from Arena Club. The chase was a Shohei Ohtani Bowman Anime card.

What we got was a Gleyber Torres rookie. Valued at $40.

Womp womp.

Arena Club offered us $36 to take it back, which is a hair over 90% of the comp and exactly what they advertise. We took it, and put the $36 toward a $50 pack for a shot at a Paul Skenes Anime card.

We got a PSA 8 Gold Label Rickey Henderson. A $30 card.

All in, we spent $114 to get a $30 card.

The odds were posted and the buyback paid out exactly as promised. Nobody swindled us here. We just lost.

The Business Model

As collectors, we tend to forget that trading cards are first and foremost a business. Companies wouldn’t be making these if there wasn’t money in it. So when something new comes onto the scene, know that the ultimate goal is profit. Not for you, but for the business.

So how do digital pack openings make money? Let’s make it simple.

Say The Hobby Wire is getting into the digital pack business. (We’re not. Nor would we ever.)

We want to sell 1,000 digital multi-sport packs at $50 a pack, with one chase card worth $25,000 in the mix. That’s $50,000 coming in. To make the average value of the cards match the price of a pack, we need 999 other cards averaging $25 each. Which would mean 99.9% of buyers pull a card worth half of what they paid. And every one of them would be incentivized to sell it back to us at 80% of the comp, or $20.

That’s where the money starts coming in for us.

It’s the second round of slab packs where it starts looking good. We sell another 1,000 packs at $50 and another $50,000 comes in. Our costs this time? Roughly $20,000 to buy back the 999 cards from the first wave of packs, plus $25,000 to replace the chase card that shipped out. Call it $5,000 in profit. Then we rinse and repeat.

This assumes everyone who pulled a $25 card sells it back. Realistically, some will hold, and every card we don’t get back is one we have to go buy on the open market. That eats into the margin, but we already made our money back the moment the packs sold out, so the downside is capped. If the customer does want the card shipped to them, we’ll charge a fee to pull it from the vault and put the shipping costs on them, which helps offset what we lost by not getting the card back.

The big money is in buying these cards back at a discount and reloading them into the next batch. So our real goal as a business is to convince you not to take your card home.

Easy enough. You just stock the pool with cards no one is in a hurry to own. A Ben Simmons Silver Prizm. A Ken Waldichuk auto. Our 2018 Gleyber Torres, for that matter. It’s not at random. That’s the product working as designed.

So Are They Worth It?

A single $25,000 chase card sitting on top of 999 pieces of filler is an extreme setup. We built it that way because the math is easier to follow when there’s only one thing worth chasing.

Real digital packs tend to be more nuanced. Most pools carry several cards priced above the pack, not just one. Plenty of them are tiered, with a grail at the top and a spread of respectable hits underneath, and that larger spread of mid-tier hits makes it feel like you have a better shot at a win, which is exactly what keeps people buying.

But that only changes how a pack feels. It doesn’t change the house edge.

One card above the buy-in or fifty, the pool still has to average out to something the operator can work with. Which means the overwhelming majority of what’s in there is worth less than what you paid.

Which brings us back to that convergence promise. Buy enough packs and your average pull will approach what you paid. That’s a true statement that turns out to be useless in practice. Nobody is buying anywhere near the number of packs convergence requires. Maybe you buy a few. Maybe five. Maybe ten if you really like the quick hits of dopamine. We bought two. In our fake company, you would need to buy 1,000.

And these days, the convergence promise is showing up less and less. There’s too much money left on the table when you cap the value of your pool at the price of your product. Selling our packs for just $5 more would net us another $5,000 in pure profit.

So let’s just call this what it is.

Digital pack openings are the slot machines of the hobby. Your money goes in, sometimes you win, and more often you don’t.

Outside buying graded singles, almost every corner of this hobby involves some kind of gamble. That’s fine, as long as we as collectors know that what we’re really paying for is entertainment. We rip wax for the fun of it, not the profit.

If you want the rush of the reveal without driving to the LCS or sitting through a two-hour break, digital pack openings deliver exactly that. Quick, clean, and the buyback means the floor is never zero. Just budget for it like you would a night out. When the money is spent, it’s gone. The second you start telling yourself that a randomized pack opening is an investment, the math stops being on your side.

With Fanatics and GameStop now in the picture, these things aren’t going anywhere. Neither are the ads. Somewhere, an algorithm has us pegged as an easy mark.

It’s not wrong. We’ve got a $30 Rickey Henderson to prove it.

All week, we’ve been thinking about that comp. We pointed out in the case study that a major difference between Posey and Rutschman is that Posey played his entire career in San Francisco. After this year’s trade deadline, Adley lost the chance to do that in Baltimore.

These days, staying with one team for a whole career is a rarity. But it’s still a narrative that can really move card prices. We want to know by how much.

So today we’re going to try and put a number on it.

We’re pulling PSA 10 rookie cards from pairs of players in each of the three major sports, matched on stats and accolades as closely as humanly possible.

We’re trying to keep this in a vacuum, so we’re picking pairings that rule out the other things that drive card values. Differing levels of popularity. Significantly more rings or MVPs. Different eras of Wax. Stuff like that.

If this works, we’ll walk away with a number we can use in future case studies.

The Goldin Touch: How Goldin Auctions Works

If there’s one thing Goldin is good at, it’s advertising.

If you have an interest in sports cards or other collectibles, odds are the algorithm has fed you Ken Goldin’s face at least once.

Goldin sells itself as the home for premier collectibles, touting their vast network of buyers and sellers and wide reach across the hobby.

Since starting up in 2012, they’ve turned their traditional auction house into a full-fledged media brand. Ken Goldin shows up on news segments pitching collectibles as an alternative asset class. They’ve got a show on Netflix. Add that to their huge social media presence and collaborations with names like Logan Paul, and you start to think they might be right when they say consigning with Goldin puts the most eyes on your card.

Seems simple enough. More visibility means more money.

At least that’s what went through out heads when we decided to consign a card with them.

Goldin runs auctions in two tiers. Weekly auctions are geared towards graded cards valued under $7,500. Monthly Elite Auctions are for the grails. The 1/1 Wembys, the LeBron Triple Logoman, cards like that.

The Card We Consigned

During our review of 2025 Topps Chrome Update Baseball, we pulled a pretty big card.

You don’t come across a numbered SSP Insert every day, but we have less than zero interest in non-sport. This one went straight from the pack to PSA with every intention of flipping as soon as we got the grade back. Cards like this carry the most value right at release, so we sprung for the 20 day turnaround (though, it actually took closer to two and a half months. Thanks PSA).

Comping this card was no easy task. With only ten in existence, we couldn’t find a single sale of this exact card before we shipped it off. Closest we saw was a black Goofy that sold for $700 raw. When the raw version moves at that number, a 9 coming back isn’t the end of the world.

Turns out we didn’t need to worry at all.

PSA 10’s typically run 2-3x the price of a raw copy. So when the good news came back, we set our expectations around $1,800.

How the Auction Went

We made a big mistake right at the jump.

We sent this card straight to the PSA vault before we decided where we were selling it. Vaulting with PSA cost us over a month and a half. Two weeks before the card even landed in the Vault. Another twenty days to get it shipped from the Vault over to Goldin. Plus a fee for pulling it out before the 90 day mark.

Lesson learned. Don’t vault with PSA unless you’re planning to sell through PSA.

That aside, things started off well. We submitted our inquiry and a Goldin rep reached out to us same day with a plan and a contract. They penciled the card in for a weekly auction, with Goldin taking 5% of the sale price plus the entirety of the buyer’s premium. Made sense to us. We weren’t expecting to earn a down payment on a car out of this thing. We’ve heard the commission can move depending on the card.

Through the whole Vault fiasco, Goldin stayed communicative, promptly replying to emails we sent to confirm they’d received the card. Once it landed, they told us processing would take 2-3 weeks before it would hit the block. Our hope for selling this card ASAP started to turn to hope for selling this card eventually.

Then three weeks went by without a peep. We gave it one more, then reached out to follow up. It took another two weeks after that before we finally saw the card on the auction block.

The sale itself was quiet most of the week. Then the final day hit and the bids started stacking up. The card even went into extended bidding for about an hour.

Final Hammer Price: $1,647 (buyer’s premium included)

Our cut landed in our account within two weeks of closing. After everything it took to get this card on the auction block, the back end was the smoothest part of the whole process.

Report Card

When we grade these auction houses, we’re sticking to the same five criteria every time.

Support/Transparency: How communicative is the auction house through the process? Do they guide you or keep you in the dark? Do you get a real point of contact, or a general inbox and a ticket number?

Fees: Are commissions and fees reasonable or way out of line? This covers the consignor commission plus anything else deducted before you get paid.

Presentation: Are the scans and photos good enough to actually sell the card? Is the description accurate?

Speed: Once the card is in their possession, how quickly does it make it to the block?

Value: Did the card hit the price we expected? Or did we fall short of comps?

From the moment we put in our inquiry, we had a dedicated point person we could reach out to at any time. They were very helpful explaining the game plan and walking us through getting our card out of the PSA vault. We would’ve liked to get a few updates on where our card was during processing, especially after they blew past their own 2-3 week projections.

Fees — A

Every deducted fee was listed clearly in the consignment contract. 5% is more than reasonable given that eBay takes 12-13% and makes you do all the work. The buyer’s premium is what helps Goldin keep the seller side that low.

Presentation — A

High quality imaging, accurate description. Can’t ask for more here.

Speed — C+

We’re not faulting Goldin for our own blunder with the PSA vault. But their own three week delay to get this card on the block is cause for concern. Timing is everything with card sales. Know going in that if you’re trying to hit the start of a season or a playoff run, you might need to send it earlier than you think.

Value — A

We pegged this card around $1,800. A buyer paid $1,647 for it. On a card with ten copies in existence and not one public sale to comp against, landing that close is a win.

Final Grade — B+

Would we Use Them Again?

All in all, we wouldn’t mind consigning with Goldin again. Now that we’ve seen how the machine works, we’ve got a much better idea of how to play it next time.

First, have your card in hand and ship it directly. That gets it there weeks faster than triggering shipping from a vault.

Second, talk to your point person about timing before you sign anything. If they can’t hit your window, better to know now. You can always take your card elsewhere if it doesn’t seem like a good fit.

So is Goldin the best place to consign your cards? One house in, we’re not calling it yet. But they set a good baseline. Every review from here gets measured against it.

In 2019, that was the pitch for Adley Rutschman. And for a while, it was working as advertised. A switch-hitting catcher with an elite defensive reputation, dropped into an organization where 100 losses had become the new norm. Once he got called up, Baltimore started getting taken seriously.

Now, four years after that debut, he’s been traded to the Red Sox. And his gem mint base rookie refractor changes hands for less than twenty bucks.

Somewhere along the way, the hobby made a decision about Adley Rutschman. Let’s find out if it made the right one.

Rutsch Hour

• C / Boston Red Sox / Draft Info: Round 1, Pick 1 (2019)

Rutschman was the consensus best player in his draft class, and by a very wide margin. He wasn’t a high-upside gamble. He was the kind of backstop who changes the trajectory of whatever organization lands him. When Baltimore selected the Golden Spikes and Dick Howser winner out of Oregon State, they handed him $8.1 million. When they called him up in 2022, it wasn’t just a rookie getting a shot. It was Baltimore telling the rest of MLB to pay attention.

Adley’s bat is built on control, not thump. He’s a true switch-hitter with real value from both sides and some of the best plate discipline in the sport. He walks. He almost never strikes out, sitting at a 14 percent strikeout rate this season. He grinds out at-bats and wears pitchers down. The power is gap-to-gap rather than light-tower. He’ll run into 15 to 20 homers and stack doubles instead of threatening 35.

Behind the plate, he’s the real deal. He was the best defensive catcher in all of Minor League Baseball in 2021, and Boston’s front office pointed directly at the glove when explaining why they gave up such a loaded prospect package. Rutschman gives them elite framing, blocking, and the part that never shows up in a box score: game-calling. Orioles pitchers talked about him like a coach who happened to be squatting. That’s exactly what a contender pays a prospect haul for.

The concern is in the last two seasons. Adley was hurt for all of 2025 whether he was on the IL or not, and the stats took the hit. This year started to follow the same shape. Catchers age faster than any other position in the sport. When your guy is 28 and already breaking down, you need to keep an eye on that.

But the fit in Boston looks good at a glance. He’s under team control through 2027, and Fenway is a great park for doubles hitters. If there’s a version of Adley Rutschman that gets back to his 2023 form, a pennant race is as good a place as any to go find it.

The Lowdown

Baseball collectors know this release all too well. Updates is a post-season release that captures the trades and signings that happened during the year. This is the first time Topps has run an Update set for the NBA.

The difference between the two sports matters here. In baseball, rookies get called up all season, so an Update set shows up loaded with brand-new rookie cards. Basketball doesn’t work that way. The rookies in this checklist are the same ones we’ve been chasing since draft night. What’s new is the photography, with the class shot in alternate and City Edition uniforms, plus a fresh run of inserts to collect.

Chase Cards to Know

Every collector with an ear to the ground knows what the big chase in Chrome Updates is. Rookie Debut Patch Autos are the best chase Fanatics and Topps have ever built. A one-of-one patch cut from the jersey a player wore in the first game of what could be a storied career. Who’s passing that up?

Right now, Paul Skenes holds the record sale for a Debut Patch Auto at $1.1 million. Basketball being basketball, we wouldn’t be surprised to see that number fall the moment the Flagg hits the auction block.

Topps is also bringing another MLB favorite across. Alter Egos is a super short printed insert set with bold illustrations of the game’s biggest stars built around their nicknames. The set has worked very well in baseball. The art alone should carry it in the NBA.

Talent Watch

These rookies are driving nearly all of the hobby interest in this checklist.

Cooper Flagg, Forward - Dallas Mavericks
No Donćič? No Problem. The reigning Rookie of the Year, and he earned it. Flagg spent his first season proving he's the real deal: a forward who scores, rebounds, passes, and defends without an obvious hole in his game. If you were watching Mavericks games this year, you were watching to see this kid cook. He averaged 21 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game and became the youngest player in NBA history to drop 50 in a game. The hobby noticed. With Kyrie back, this team should be better.

Kon Knueppel, Guard - Charlotte Hornets
Knueppel was the new face of the Hornets before LaMelo got traded. Lights out from deep. The numbers back it up: 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists. He's not sneaking up on anyone anymore. Next season, he gets to show the world what he looks like as a true number one option.

Dylan Harper, Shooting Guard - San Antonio Spurs
Dylan Harper is forcing San Antonio's hand. He's too good for a bench role and he gels alongside Castle and Wemby. We're getting serious 2012 Thunder vibes from this roster and Harper is the Harden. Here's hoping San Antonio starts him instead of trading him.

VJ Edgecombe, Shooting Guard - Philadelphia 76ers
Edgecombe looked every bit like the high-upside two-way guard scouts projected, just further along offensively than anyone expected. He's not just an athlete. He's a legitimate on-ball creator with defensive playmaking on top. The next step is tightening his handle and his half-court reads. LeBron in Philly can only speed that up.

Ace Bailey, Small Forward - Utah Jazz
Bailey was always the boom-or-bust pick of this class, and year one in Utah was a decent enough first chapter: 13.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. There's room to grow. Anyone buying his cards right now is betting on a real leap next season. We'll see.

Secondary market prices on Hobby and Jumbo Hobby send their cost per card straight to the moon. The guaranteed autos carry all of that weight. For set collectors, retail is the move, with the Value Box landing at the lowest cost per card in the release.

What the Numbers Say

Exclusive parallels make some formats look more valuable than they are. Keeping your eyes on the prize narrows it down considerably.

Base Card Parallels

Like so many recent Topps releases, each format gets its own exclusive rainbow to collect. Hobby and Jumbo have Waves. Breaker’s Delight has its usual geometrics. Megas have the X-Fractors. Value has the Basketball parallels. RayWaves show up across all retail formats, though the colored RayWave parallels look exclusive to the Mega Boxes.

As always, the real money is in the true color parallels. In Chrome Update, those are shared across every format, with the best expected spend coming from Value Boxes and the Fanatics Mega a very close second.

Inserts

If inserts are your jam, there’s really only one place to look. Value Boxes created a wall of green all the way down our index for shared inserts and most of their parallels, SSPs like Minions and Helix included.

We say “most” because, for whatever reason, a lot of the black and red parallels pull better out of other formats, with Value Boxes consistently landing among the worst.

Retail exclusive inserts are a different story. Paradox and Glass Canvas both come cheaper out of Mega Boxes. Fanatical belongs to the Fanatics Mega.

One name is missing from this odds sheet entirely: the base version of Alter Egos. The only Alter Egos listed anywhere is the Superfractor, easiest to pull from the EA SKU of the Mega Box, meaning the brick-and-mortar version. If Alter Egos is your chase, you’re buying blind on the base cards. That’s worth knowing before you spend.

Autos

At this point it’s a given.

Autos come out of the Hobby formats. The guarantees alone get it done. Jumbo fares slightly better for base Chrome Autographs and their parallels, and a lot better for insert autos.

Base Chromographs, a retail exclusive auto, pull best from Value Boxes, though their parallels come easier out of the Fanatics Megas.

Superfractors flip the script. Superfractors of base Chrome autographs actually pull best from the Fanatics Megas. Maybe that $100 is money well spent this year.

Now, what you’re actually here for.

Rookie Debut Patch Autos are sprinkled across every format with the exception of the CEE Value Box. The worst odds by a wide margin belong to the SE SKUs of both the Value and Mega Boxes, which is the direct-from-Topps version. Everyone who preordered those unsealed Megas is looking at a much more expensive road to an RDPA. Not impossible. Just expensive.

The best odds go to the CEE Mega Box. There’s always been a little controversy about what CEE stands for. We went to the source, asking Topps Customer Service, and the answer we got was that these boxes are used for specific retailers, often Walmart. There’s also a case to be made that CEE stands for Central and Eastern Europe, which is the standard meaning for the abbreviation in distribution. We’re working on a second opinion to break the tie.

If you can’t track down CEE, the Fanatics Mega Box lands close behind.

The odds stay fixed. The market doesn’t.

🎯 Verdict: Rip, Flip, or Skip

At The Hobby Wire, we like to keep it simple.

• Rip → The checklist, price, and excitement all line up. Bust down the door.

• Flip → Solid class, but prices are too high to rip comfortably. Buy singles on the players you want. For wax, grab a box or two to sit on and sell in a year or two once the rookie class starts to prove itself.

• Skip → Junk Wax. Hard pass. Overpriced, overproduced, or saddled with a weak class.

We aren’t sold on the idea of an Updates release for basketball. With no new rookies to add, this reads like a delivery vehicle for the Debut Patch Autos and not much else. And with prices doubling on the secondary market before a box has shipped, it looks like it doesn’t need to be more than that.

This product was way out of our price range to begin with, so we passed on the preorder. We passed on the unsealed Mega Boxes too. Why? We had a gut feeling this one was heading for Flip territory.

Since the RDPA first showed up, wax prices on these releases climb like nothing else in the hobby, especially while the biggest names are still out there. Yoshinobu Yamamoto hasn’t been pulled from 2024 Update Baseball, and that alone has pushed Mega Box prices from $50 MSRP to north of $300.

We’re not saying don’t rip this product. If you want a shot at an RDPA for yourself, ripping is the only way to get one. But we think there’s more value in buying and holding this wax than opening it. For a lot of these boxes, the potential for what could be inside is worth more than what’s actually in them.

If you’re holding, hold the boxes carrying the best RDPA odds at the lowest buy-in. That’s CEE Megas and Fanatics Megas at $85 to $100.

And this rookie crop isn’t something to be slept on. There’s legitimate superstar talent in this class. If you want exposure now, pick up some singles or buy into a break or two. Let your sealed wax sit on the shelf and age like a fine wine. A couple years from now, we think you’ll be happy you did.

One note on the format call below. Most Valuable Format goes to the box delivering the best expected spend across the widest range of cards, not the best odds on the single biggest chase. Value Boxes and Fanatics Megas win on breadth. If the RDPA is the only card you care about, you already know where to go.

Around the Hobby

Like we said, it’s peak card show season. Fanatics Fest hit New York in the middle of the month, and The National Sports Collectors Convention took over Rosemont a couple weeks later.

We got our heads inside The National for a day, and man, was it busy. From what we saw, the bulk of the vendors on the floor were hawking vintage and Pokémon.

Our readers know we love to rip wax. And our goal at The National is always the same: find the stuff we can't get our hands on at home. We think we picked up a pretty good mix. A hobby box of 2010 Bowman Draft, some 2008 Bowman Chrome packs, and a little 2012 Series 2 to feed our undying thirst for the Bryce Harper short print.

We also took a flyer on a Blowout Mega Mix after passing on them last year. At least in our box, we weren’t disappointed.

It'll be a while before we get through all of it. But we'll be ripping.

In other news, Fanatics finally made a move on the wax prices collectors have been eating on the secondary market. The method? Selling mega boxes of 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Basketball unsealed.

Hobby Twitter had opinions. The logic tracks. Crack the seal, and flippers lose the sealed-product premium that makes scalping worth the effort. And it worked, to a point. The mega boxes took a couple days to sell out instead of the usual five minutes.

But we think this could have been executed better. Secondary prices on the unsealed wax doubled almost immediately, because unsealed was the only mega box on the market. Release sealed and unsealed side by side and the story looks different.

It was good instinct. But an incomplete follow-through.

Baseball

Yesterday closed the book on a wild MLB trade deadline. The Dodgers pounced early and landed Tarik Skubal without paying anything close to what you'd expect, which is becoming a bit of a pattern with them. The Cubs rebuilt most of a rotation and bullpen in a week, headlined by Kevin Gausman.

But the biggest surprise of this year’s deadline belongs to the Red Sox, who pulled the trigger on former hobby darling Adley Rutschman.

The 2019 first overall pick was the face of the new-look Orioles. But after a strong first year, the bat cooled. And getting hot again got a lot harder once he started splitting time with Baltimore’s other catching stud, Samuel Basallo. Maybe a change of scenery is all he needs to right the ship.

Rutschman’s 2023 Topps Chrome rookie auto is up 12% overnight. The market hasn’t given up on this kid yet.

Basketball

LeBron James is taking his talents to Philadelphia. The 41-year-old joins a core of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid in the pursuit of another title.

From a pure basketball standpoint, this works for both sides. Philly was already a contender. Adding LeBron brings a mentality this roster hasn’t had. Health permitting, they’re the team to beat in the East.

There’s not much left LeBron can do to move his card values. And yet his raw 2003 Topps rookie is up 11.4% since the signing was announced on July 27. Could be the deal. Could be the GOAT bubble the market’s been sitting in.

Football

Training camps are well underway. We’ve got contract standoffs running from Bijan Robinson to Baker Mayfield, and two teams still sorting out who takes the first snap in Week 1.

Cleveland is choosing between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Minnesota is choosing between Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy. Four quarterbacks, two jobs, and four card markets waiting on a final depth chart.

This is the part of the football calendar we circle every year. The names get announced, the hype follows, and the prices follow the hype. If you like one of these four, the window to buy is now. Not opening week.

The other story we’ve been following this month comes out of sunny California.

The noise is getting louder that Aaron Donald wants back in. He’s been spotted working out at Rams facilities, and nobody involved has shut the idea down. Pair him with recently acquired Myles Garrett and you’ve got a defensive front that offensive coordinators would lose sleep over. Whether Donald still has juice in the tank is a different story.

Donald cards haven’t moved much during this stretch, but his 2014 Topps Chrome refractor RC is up a modest 13% over the past couple months. Not bad for an interior lineman in this hobby.

Draft night in Kansas City belonged to the quarterbacks. Three of them went inside the first four picks.

Three seasons is usually enough time for a card market to sort itself out. This one hasn’t moved much at all, and the gap between what this class was supposed to be and what it’s actually shaping up to be is wider than almost any class we’ve regraded.

So how does the 2023 NFL rookie crop stack up today?

Snapshot — What We Thought Then

The quarterback room was the whole story. Four passers were positioned to go inside the top five, which made this cycle look stronger than the two before it, and PFF graded the group as legitimately strong with a passer worthy of the first overall pick. But the reporting kept circling back to the same caveat. All of them had flaws.

Bryce Young, QB, Alabama. The consensus QB1 on most final boards. Heisman winner, elite processor, best pure passer in the class. Evaluators had him as the most polished passer available. The 5’10”, 204-pound frame was the entire debate. Everything else was praise.

C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State. The rising alternative at 6’3”, 218, with prototypical size, underrated mobility and a big arm. He improved his stock as much as anyone from the Playoff game against Georgia through a stellar Combine. The knock was a low cognition score that leaked pre-draft.

Will Levis, QB, Kentucky. The prototype. 6’3”, 229, with elite arm strength and a compact release that let him drive the ball anywhere on the field. Josh Allen comparisons followed him all spring. The problem was the tape. He regressed as a senior behind a bad offensive line while playing through shoulder, foot and finger injuries, and his turnover-worthy throws nearly doubled his big-time throws. Most boards still had him top five anyway.

Will Anderson Jr., EDGE, Alabama. The safe blue-chipper. Highest floor in the class, no off-field concerns, searing explosiveness and lateral agility. One of the few true blue chips on the board.

Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia. Highest ceiling, highest risk. A rare 3-technique at 6’3”, 310 who could wreck a game against the run or the pass. He arrived attached to legal trouble and a poor pro day, and teams had to decide how much capital they were willing to put on it.

Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida. The lottery ticket. Historic Combine athleticism, 13 career college starts, wildly inconsistent accuracy. About as raw as a first-round quarterback gets. Whoever drafted him was signing up to wait.

Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas. The most exciting non-quarterback. Widely considered generational, the best back since Barkley, and by some accounts the best athlete in the draft. The only real debate was positional value. How early is too early for a generational running back?

From the outside, the reviews got cold quickly. ESPN’s Matt Miller called it a weaker class overall, stocked with older players who’d been delayed by COVID opt-out years. CBS was blunter, framing 2023 as a real drop-off in top-tier talent.

No consensus number one. A top-heavy quarterback draft attached to a class scouts openly called mediocre.

So were they right?

Even before we put out our wax watch, our regular readers would have been able to tell we were excited for 2026 Topps Chrome. This rookie crop is electric. Chock full of heavy hitters and potential aces on the mound. Chrome brings them all together on premium stock, with a boatload of parallels and autos to chase.

We felt like this release was going to be something special, so we spent more than we ever have on preorder: 2x Hobby Boxes and 2x Jumbos. We even found a couple blasters out in the wild before we started ripping.

Were we right to go all-in on this year’s Chrome?

Base

When we first saw this jersey stitching design back in February, we were skeptical about how it would translate onto chromium stock. We were wrong.

The base cards look clean, keeping all the detail and depth we’ve liked about the design since we started ripping Series One.

Quality control holds up too. We’d say about 90% of the cards looked great. For the other 10%, centering and surface issues were the main culprits.

Given how much they print of this product, we’ll take it.

Verdict: A — A surprisingly great design for chrome with some expected QC issues.

Inserts

The insert lineup here is a familiar one. Future Stars and the 35th Anniversary cards are a staple of every Chrome release. Big Ticket Players from Series One gets a chrome version as well. Then Topps dusted off some oldies, but goodies.

Perspectives hasn't been in a product since 2016, and we didn't realize how much we missed it until it was back in our hands. Probably our favorite common insert in this year's lineup. Topps went even further into the way-back machine for 1996's Wrecking Crew. It's a fun blast from the past, though it showed up as recently as 2024 Topps Archives.

There are some new designs here too. Wild Style isn’t the rarest card you can pull, but it feels like a case hit. Vibrant colors and a design that reminds us of 2023 Big League’s Roll Call insert have us seriously considering completing the set. Diamond Moments is a different story. Using a rare insert to highlight baseball's biggest historical moments is a great idea. The design just doesn't do anything with it. If it were more common, we'd be as sick of it as we are of Stars of the MLB.

Verdict: A- — Good mix of nostalgia and new. Some of the rarer inserts don't hit.

Parallels

Parallels are the bread and butter for a release like Topps Chrome. Our mega rip gave us a chance to see most of what it has to offer.

The colors are deep and vibrant, with near perfect QC on every one we pulled. Format exclusives like Raywaves and Prisms were nice, but nothing beats the true color refractors in this lineup.

Don’t sleep on the blaster exclusive parallels this year. Topps ditched the usual pink and sepia for Red, White and Blue and Baseball Stitches. It’s a great move, and long overdue.

Verdict: A+ — The new introductions only strengthen an already strong parallel lineup.

Two boxes of a format is enough to spot a pattern, not enough to confirm one. That said, a few things jumped out.

Blasters had the most pack variance of anything we ripped. No repeatable pattern to hone in on. Each box gave us 10 inserts and parallels combined, but the split moved (4/6 in Blaster #1, 5/5 in Blaster #2). We pulled a numbered card out of the first box, and from the looks of it, a hit like that is a true bonus. It doesn’t come out of the standard count.

Hobby had the most rigid collation by far. The Prism Refractors landed in the second pack of every quadrant. Fine. Harmless, even.

The next part isn’t.

Numbered parallels. Autos. Every big hit came out of the fourth pack in each quadrant. One of those fourth-row packs came up empty, but the other three delivered. That lets bad actors cherry-pick the good stuff and sell the rest to make their money back.

Our Jumbos showed similar patterns.

Numbered parallels consistently showed up in packs L3, R1 and R3. Wave parallels went into every even numbered pack. The autos moved around, landing in a different spot in each box.

So here’s the standing advice, again. Don’t buy loose hobby packs unless you’re the one picking them.

One more thing. Rookie parallels were hard to come by in the blasters and hobby boxes. By the time we finished those two formats, we had a couple RC logos to show for it. Our Jumbos were overflowing with them. It might be a quirk of our specific rip. It’s still worth watching.

Final Thoughts

This was a fun rip top to bottom, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t have a favorite format.

Blasters look like a solid retail buy this year, with parallels people might actually want to collect. At $40, it’s the cheapest ticket into a premium product. That’s its whole job, and this year they do it well.

Hobby ranked best on our Wax Value Index for expected spend. We pulled the most true color refractors from this format, and it makes sense why. Roughly two numbered cards per box, with no numbered exclusive refractors in the checklist to dilute them.

If we graded on fun factor alone, Jumbo Hobby wins going away. Parallels in every pack and two autos had us excited to open everything.

But time and time again, true color parallels are the ones that hold.

That’s why hobby is our most valuable format. Two numbered parallels per box, same as the Jumbos. But in a hobby box, these can really only be the good stuff. Expected auto spend runs nearly identical between Hobby and Jumbo, so the parallels break the tie.

No matter which format you go with, this year’s Chrome is something special.

Every rookie of this A+ class is in it. Misiorowski, McGonigle, Wetherholt, and more. No one was saved for Update. That’s rarer than it sounds. Most years a class this loaded shows up in pieces, spread across multiple releases, and you’re chasing it well into the next year.

We think the retail window is going to be short. Once the shelves clear and the secondary market is the only way to get this wax, the entry price moves on every format. We’re buying whatever we find at retail while it’s still sitting there. Blasters included. When a class runs this deep, every rip is a shot at it.

So, were we right to go all-in on preorder?

Not exactly.

We should have gone bigger.

The modern GOAT debate in soccer has been Messi or Ronaldo for two decades. Then the hobby anointed a new chosen one, and over two weeks this month he tore through both of them to put a World Cup in Spain’s hands.

Spain’s 1-0 extra time win over Argentina reads like a beginning, not a peak. The 19-year-old winger already has a La Liga title, a European Championship and now a World Cup. Keep that pace and he’ll own the most sought-after soccer card of his generation.

His card prices are already acting like it.

So we’re pulling up the release that holds one of his most coveted rookie cards to see if there’s anything left in it.

Let’s rip in.

2023-24 Topps Chrome UEFA Club Competitions

The 200-card base set covers the Champions League, the Europa League and the Europa Conference League, which means one checklist holds nearly every player worth owning in European football. Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Vini Jr. The whole board.

Topps also went wild with color here. Every base card carries roughly 30 different versions across Lava, Wave, Prism, Geometric, X-Fractor and standard Refractor patterns. Building a rainbow of anybody in this set is a multi-year project.

But this release has one reason to exist in 2026, and it wears number 10 for Barcelona.

Yamal was 16 when these cards were printed. He’d made his Barcelona debut, he’d started scoring in the Champions League, and the hobby had barely registered him.

After a La Liga title, a European Championship and a World Cup, that base rookie is a $590 card in a PSA 10. His Refractor runs $1,845.

Where’s Yamal?

Before you pick a box, you need to know where this kid actually lives on this checklist.

Yamal shows up eight times before you start counting parallels.

Look at what isn’t on that list. He’s not in Future Stars, the subset Topps built specifically to flag young talent. He’s not in Wonderkids Autographs either. That’s a four-card checklist, and it went to Evan Ferguson, Hákon Haraldsson, Karim Konate and Lewis Miley.

Where they did put him says more. Hobby Masters runs ten cards deep: Haaland, Saka, Osimhen, Dybala, Kane, Messi, Ronaldo, and a 16-year-old. Black Lazer puts his signature in the same 28-card set as Messi, Ronaldo, and Neymar. Somebody at Topps knew.

For anyone reading this to decide which box to buy, the coverage splits in a way that matters. Jumbo is the only format with a path to seven of the eight Yamal cards in the checklist. Hobby and Breaker’s Delight get six apiece. Blasters top out at five, and they can’t produce a base Refractor at all.

One thing worth being straight about. The Index prices a card type, not a player. Pulling a Chrome Autograph out of a jumbo is a very different proposition than pulling his. There are 85 names on that checklist.

That’s the tension running through this entire release. The cheap way in and the card you want are almost never in the same box.

What the Numbers Say

Chrome runs six formats this year, and Topps handed every one of them a rainbow of its own.

Hobby keeps the Prism, Jumbo owns the Waves, Mega holds the X-Fractors, and it runs on down the line through the Blaster RayWaves, the Breakers' Delight Geometrics, and a Fanatics Mega that quietly walked off with the Topps Refractors and an insert set nobody else gets.

Exclusive parallels are fun, but it's not the part that decides where your money goes.

Underneath all six of those rainbows is one shared checklist, and on the cards every format is allowed to print, the results are far less democratic. We split it into the three categories that actually move the needle: base parallels, inserts, and autos. For Chrome Baseball, only one of them lands where you'd expect.

Base Card Parallels

Format exclusives aside, the value on base parallels and image variations skews hard toward Hobby. That surprised us. Usually, once the only price you can pay is the secondary market price, Hobby loses ground if you’re chasing the rainbow. Not here. Numbered refractors come in at almost a third of the expected spend of the next best format, Value (Blaster) Boxes.

The one base parallel Hobby doesn’t win is the standard refractor. Retail runs away with that one, and Blasters lead the pack.

Despite the $75/card price, Breakers’ Delight isn’t the worst format here for once. That crown goes to the Fanatics Mega Box. Numbered cards and image variations are brutally tough to pull out of those, tougher even than the retail Mega. If base parallels are your jam, stay away.

Inserts

When an insert runs across most formats, like 1991 Topps Baseball or Big Ticket Players, Blasters are the best buy for the base versions. Chasing the parallels? Hobby Boxes reign supreme.

Retail exclusive sets like Chrome Rivals and Past to Present follow the same split, with a twist. Blasters again take the base cards, but the Fanatics Mega Box is bursting with the parallels. The odds are heavily in that format’s favor. The green parallel of Past to Present sits at 1 in every 307 Fanatics Mega packs, compared to 1 in 3,246 standard Mega packs or 1 in 10,493 Blaster packs.

Hobby exclusive inserts mostly follow the same pattern. Base inserts pull best out of the Hobby Box, while the parallels are lurking in Jumbo. The exception? The Exposé short print. Breakers’ Delight has the best value on that subset and its parallels.

It isn’t our cup of tea, but if you’re all-in on the Minions MLB inserts, start with Hobby Boxes and treat Fanatics Megas as your next best option.

Autos & Relics

As usual, if you want autographs, look no further than Hobby and Jumbo. What’s interesting this year is that the expected spend is nearly identical between them. A Hobby Box runs you $804.89 for a Rookie Auto. Jumbo? $804.94. Five cents apart. Pick whichever one you like better. The odds don’t care.

A couple of outliers. Chrome Legends Autos and World Series Champions Autos both pull easier out of Breakers’ Delight. So do the Gold Logoman Autograph Relics. The straight Gold Logoman relics stay in Hobby, so know which one you’re chasing before you pick a format.

For Retail Rookie Autos, Blasters are the only way to go.

Most Valuable Format?

The numbers above are purely mathematical. They don’t account for preference or guarantees.

So how are we reading it?

Our verdict hasn’t changed. 2026 Topps Chrome Baseball is a rip.

If you’re building sets, the Blaster is the best forty dollars in this release and it isn’t close. $1.43/card, the cheapest base Refractor, the cheapest path to a retail auto. That box is doing real work for the money.

Breakers’ Delight came out better than we expected too. Still not a format we’d tell you to go buy, but the odds sheet says it isn’t the worst use of your money either.

The most valuable format?

Hobby. Even at the inflated price.

We leaned that way on feel. The math backs it. What we didn’t expect was how little the price mattered. Chrome Hobby opened at a $240 MSRP and sits north of $340 today, and a jump like that is usually the thing that ends a format’s case. We watched it happen two weeks ago. Finest Hobby ran up to $550 and handed the entire base parallel category to a $70 Mega without a fight.

Chrome absorbed it.

Hobby still takes nearly every shared numbered parallel on the board. It takes the Image Variations. It takes the Super Short Prints. Radiating Rookies, Ink Strokes, 75th Diamond, the Chromographs, Minions, the Logoman relics. All Hobby. And it matches a box costing almost twice as much on rookie autos, the card this entire product is built around.

That’s the case. One box, one price, the lowest expected spend on almost everything worth chasing.

We went bigger on preorder for this one than we ever have. Nothing in the odds sheet makes us regret it.

Topps Chrome turns 30 this year. It debuted in 1996 as a chromium spin on flagship, and three decades later it’s still the release most collectors organize their calendar around.

The formula has shifted, though. What started as a clean chromium set is now a seemingly endless sea of parallels, and the auto count per box has been quietly trending down for years. You’re paying more and pulling less ink than you used to.

But Chrome has always been the home of the rookie auto. That hasn’t changed, and it’s still the main reason most people are in line tomorrow.

This year’s base set runs 300 cards. Stars, veterans, and the rookies driving all the conversation.

The variation game is loaded too. Base Image Variations return with alternate photography, and a 10-player Super Short Print list sits above them: Judge, Skenes, Anthony, Soto, Ohtani, Bobby Witt Jr., Acuña, Caglianone, Trout, and Samuel Basallo. Award Winners variations cover the six players who took home hardware in 2025. Lightboard Logo variations are back.

There’s a lot here. But the rookie class is why you’re reading this.

Chase Cards to Know

Rookie Autographs are the headline, and it isn’t close. On-card signatures on the base Chrome design, with the full rainbow running up to a one-of-one Superfractor. Misiorowski’s Superfractor is the card fronting Topps’ own marketing. When people talk about 2026 Chrome five years from now, they’ll be talking about these.

Gold Logoman Relics are the top of the mountain. Game-worn MLB Batter Logo patches numbered to four, with Judge, Ohtani, Skenes, Skubal, Kurtz, and Baldwin (Last year’s award winners) on the checklist. Dual Relic and Autograph Relic versions come in as one-of-ones. You aren’t planning your break around these. But if you’re the person who hits one, your box just paid for a lot more boxes.

Radiating Rookies aren’t the most coveted thing coming out of Chrome. We’ve liked them anyway since they started showing up in 2023. Whether you file them as an insert or a parallel is up to you. Either way, the card pops, and this year’s design might be the best we’ve seen. The checklist helps: Caglianone, Anthony, McGonigle, Yesavage, Murakami, and Montgomery. Great design plus a great class is usually enough.

Then there are the Minions.

Illumination’s characters get the full Chrome treatment, with MLB stars rendered as Minions in team uniforms.

We get why they’re generating buzz. They’re just not for us. A little too silly for our taste, and non-sport cards inside a sports checklist has never been our favorite thing to see. We felt the same way about the Disney short prints in 2025 Chrome Update. And don’t get us started on Allen & Ginter.

But collectability is defined by the individual. Plenty of people are going to chase the full Minions set, and it’s a great way to pull kids into the hobby. We’re probably in the minority here.

Talent Watch

An A+ class, top to bottom.

Roman Anthony, OF - Boston Red Sox
2026 Stats: 0.8 WAR, .229 AVG, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 94 OPS+
Don't let his current IL stint fool you. He's the potential face of the franchise. And when that franchise is the Red Sox, that's a big deal.

Jacob Misiorowski, SP - Milwaukee Brewers
2026 Stats: 4.4 WAR, 1.57 ERA, 173 Ks, 269 ERA+
He's doing things we haven't seen before. The stuff plays at a level that puts perennial Cy Young contention on the table, and Topps knows it. His Superfractor is the image on the product page.

Kevin McGonigle, SS - Detroit Tigers
2026 Stats: 4.8 WAR, .281 AVG, 9 HR, 35 RBI, 127 OPS+
McGonigle has shown he can hit. That part isn't in question. If the power shows up next, he's a superstar in this league.

JJ Wetherholt, 2B - St. Louis Cardinals
2026 Stats: 4.0 WAR, .260 AVG, 14 HR, 38 RBI, 115 OPS+
He comes up in the clutch. Second basemen don't get much hobby love, and that's a real obstacle here. But he looks like a key piece in a new era of Cardinals baseball, and maybe he breaks the mold.

Munetaka Murakami, 3B - Chicago White Sox
2026 Stats: 2.0 WAR, .232 AVG, 20 HR, 42 RBI, 151 OPS+
Murakami came in at exactly the right time for a fan base that needed something to keep the hope alive. Power always sells in the hobby. If the second half looks anything like the first, he's got a real shot at Rookie of the Year.

Not all boxes are created equal, especially at these prices. Here we lay out the formats, the price for each, how many cards come in a box, and the resulting $/card.

Topps is finally retiring the Pink and Sepia refractors that have lived in Chrome blasters for years. Red, White & Blue parallels take their place, a look Panini Prizm has been running for a long time and one collectors have always chased. Topps is late to it. We'll take it anyway.

🎯 Verdict: Rip, Flip, or Skip

At The Hobby Wire, we like to keep it simple.

• Rip → The checklist, price, and excitement all line up. Bust down the door.

• Flip → Solid class, but prices are too high to rip comfortably. Buy singles on the players you want. For wax, grab a box or two to sit on and sell in a year or two once the rookie class starts to prove itself.

• Skip → Junk Wax. Hard pass. Overpriced, overproduced, or saddled with a weak class.

We told you to skip Finest specifically so you could put that money here.

This is the payoff. The rookie class is A+ and we can’t stress that enough. Anthony, Misiorowski, McGonigle, Wetherholt, Murakami, Griffin, Yesavage, and that’s not even the whole list. Classes like this don’t come around often, and Chrome is where the market for all of them gets set.

Chrome is always pricey. That’s the tradeoff, and it’s been the tradeoff for thirty years. Thirty years is the part worth sitting with. Products come and go in this hobby. Chrome doesn’t. When the rookie class is this good, secondary market prices don’t tend to go down. If you can get in near retail, we’d grab a box every single time.

On the $/card math alone, blasters are the way to go, and it isn’t close. $1.43 a card against $5.23 in Jumbo.

But $/card doesn’t tell the whole story. A Chrome Rookie Auto is the gold standard for anyone looking to PC a player. It’s always available, and it’s one of the best indicators of a player’s market value we’ve got. That’s what the guarantees in hobby formats are buying you, and at these prices, it’s worth paying for.

For nine seasons, the Mahomes empire ran without a crack. A résumé that kept stacking, and a card market that only ever pointed one direction. Then 2025 handed him the first real adversity of his career. A torn ACL and LCL. A missed postseason. And a question the hobby has never had to ask about Patrick Mahomes: what if the second half doesn’t look like the first?

Here’s the strange part. His cards don’t seem to care. A 30-year-old franchise quarterback tears up his knee, and the market keeps climbing like nothing happened. Somebody’s wrong here. Either the collectors bidding him up, or every quarterback injury that came before this one.

So we ran the full workup. We stacked Mahomes against the all-time greats, mapped out where his career is likely to land, and dug into what collectors are actually paying at both ends of the market. Some of what we found lined up with the hype. Some of it stopped us cold.

Every hobby has a pilgrimage. Ours ends on a convention center floor the size of a small town, packed with dealers, corporate booths, grading companies, auction houses, and roughly every card you've ever wanted to hold in your hands.

The National has been running since 1980. It moves from city to city, and this year it lands in Chicago. Five days. Wednesday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.

Call it four and a half if we’re being precise. Wednesday is only a half day.

If you’re going for the first time, the sheer scale is the problem. It’s impossible to see everything. And the most expensive mistake a first-timer makes isn’t overpaying for a card. It’s showing up on the wrong day for what they actually want to do.

Every day at the National is good for something different. Here’s how we play it.

First, The Ticket

General admission is $30 a day right now, whether you buy it online or at the door. The advance discount window closed at the end of June.

The Early Entry and VIP passes are sold out. We wouldn’t have bought them anyway. The pitch is 60 minutes of early access plus a gift bag, and what we’ve seen come out of those bags in recent years hasn’t moved us. Unless you’re committed to all five days, GA does the job.

Save the money. Spend it on the floor.

Wednesday: Scouting Day

Show hours: 2:00pm to 8:00pm

Not every booth will be fully set up. Some dealers are still unloading, still pricing, still figuring out where the good stuff goes.

That’s fine, because Wednesday isn’t a buying day. It’s a reconnaissance day.

Here’s the trap. You’re walking a floor where every dealer has their complete inventory in front of them for the only time all week. Nothing’s been picked through. It all looks incredible. But those same dealers have four full days left to move that inventory, which means your negotiating leverage is at its absolute weakest. They have no reason to come off the sticker price. None.

So walk it. Take pictures. Note booth numbers. Figure out where the dealers are who actually stock what you collect, and build a map in your head so you can make a beeline on the days that count.

If you’re already in town for the week, Wednesday is a gift. If you’re flying in for two days, this shouldn’t be one of them.

Thursday: Sell High, Dig Deep

Show hours: 10:00am to 6:00pm

The first full day. This is when the floor comes alive and when the math starts working in your favor.

If you’re bringing cards to sell, Thursday is the day. The standard we hear from dealers is 80% of comps. On Thursday that’s a floor, not a ceiling. A dealer has four days left to flip whatever they buy from you, and four days of heavy foot traffic to find the right buyer with. Time is leverage, and on Thursday it sits on your side of the table. Push for a better number than you’d get later in the week.

Just know that the same clock cuts both ways. What helps you as a seller hurts you as a buyer. The dealer sitting on a headline card also has four days of traffic ahead of him, and he knows somebody’s coming for it. He isn’t moving on price yet. Thursday is not the day you land a grail.

But it is the day for the dollar bins. Barely anybody has touched those boxes yet. Every quality card somebody’s going to pluck out of them this week is still sitting in there right now. Pull up a chair. Get your fingers dirty. By Saturday, ten thousand people have already worked those same boxes over.

On Grading: Drop Off Thursday or Friday

PSA runs on-site grading at the show. It’s fast, and it isn’t cheap.

The cheapest option on the floor is On-Site Express at $229 per card, which covers a max insured value of $2,500 and comes back by the end of the show. Step up to On-Site Super Express and you’re at $399 per card for a $5,000 max insured value, back the same day if you drop off by noon. From there it climbs quickly.

Two questions before you get in that line.

Is this card worth over $2,000 in a gem mint slab?

$229 is a fixed fee no matter what you hand over, which means the entire question is what percentage of the card it eats.

On a $2,000 card, $229 is roughly 11%. Annoying, but survivable, and you’re selling into the densest crowd of buyers the hobby assembles all year.

On a $500 card, that same $229 is nearly half the value of the card. You just paid a grader more than the card is worth to most of the people walking past you.

If your card lands under $2,000, mail it in. The slab doesn’t grade any higher because you got it faster.

Do you need to flip it right away?

If the answer is no, there’s no reason to be standing here. The premium you’re paying is for speed, and speed is only worth something if you’re using it. If you’re grading a card for your PC and it can sit in a mailer for a few months, let it sit in a mailer for a few months.

Two yeses, go grade it. One no, mail it in and spend the difference on the floor.

And know that you’re coming back.

Unless you’re paying for same-day service, on-site grading is a multi-day commitment. But read that return window carefully, because it’s a deadline, not an appointment. Express cards come back by the end of the show, not at the end of it. We dropped off on a Friday a few years back and it was ready by Saturday afternoon.

Submissions close Saturday at noon. Hand something over on Saturday and Sunday is the earliest you’re seeing it again. That’s fine if you planned for it. It’s a problem if you flew home Saturday night.

Drop off Thursday or Friday and you’ll have the slab back with time left to actually sell it.

Friday: The Best of Both Worlds

Show hours: 10:00am to 6:00pm

If we could only go one day, this is the one.

Friday has a split personality, and that’s exactly what makes it work. During business hours, the floor is thin. People are at their jobs. You can actually move. Then the whistle blows, the after-work crowd pours in, and by evening it feels like a completely different show.

Play both halves.

Morning and early afternoon: hit the corporate booths. This is the window. Fanatics, Topps, Panini, Upper Deck, the grading companies, the newer platforms. On Friday morning, you walk up. On Saturday, you wait an hour.

And don’t sleep on those booths. The freebies at the National have real value. Shirts, hats, hobby packs, graded slabs, and yes, occasionally hobby boxes. Last year we stood in line at the Fanatics Collect booth for a free slab and walked away with a Jayson Tatum PSA 10 that we later sold for around $70. That’s a free card that paid for the ticket, the parking, and lunch.

At the Courtyard.io booth, about five people ahead of us, someone pulled a Beckett 10 Luka Doncic Silver Prizm rookie. We got an Anthony Richardson Panini Instant rookie. Not exactly a grail.

But a free slab is a free slab. We’d wait again.

One update worth knowing: Topps is not running Wrapper Redemption this year. Instead you’ll be able to buy National exclusive packs directly at the Topps booth. In past years, getting into that program meant buying hundreds of dollars of hobby boxes first. This should be easier on the wallet. We’ll see what the packs actually cost.

Afternoon and evening: go wheel and deal. Once you’ve cleared the corporate area, spend the back half of the day working the dealer tables while the energy builds.

Friday gives you the whole National without the worst of the lines.

Saturday: The Big One

Show hours: 10:00am to 6:00pm

Saturday is the busiest day of the convention by a wide margin. Every casual collector, every family, every local who could only get one day is walking that floor.

The conventional read is to avoid it. We don’t fully agree.

Trading activity peaks on Saturday. Buying, selling, swapping, it’s all happening at maximum volume. If you want to move cards, find cards, or just experience what the hobby looks like at full throttle, this is the day it’s happening.

The corporate booths are the problem. Lines wrap around the floor. We’ve spent over an hour waiting for a single free card on a Saturday. If you have the luxury of multiple days, stay out of that section entirely and handle it on Friday.

Saturday is for the floor. Not for the lines.

Sunday: Deal Day

Show hours: 10:00am to 4:00pm

Here’s the thing about the last day of a five-day show. Every dealer on that floor is looking at their inventory and doing the same calculation.

Do I want to pack this up and drive it home?

That question is worth real money to you. Sunday is when prices break. It’s true for the small guys and it’s true for the big ones. We’ve seen cases of wax at Dave & Adam’s and Blowout marked down by hundreds of dollars on the final day. Nobody wants to freight it back.

The tradeoff cuts the other way. Pickings are slim. The best cards left the building days ago, and some dealers won’t even be there.

Which brings us to the most important thing we can tell you about Sunday: go early. The show says it closes at 4:00. The show does not close at 4:00. Tables start breaking down well before then, and if you roll in at 2:00 you’re shopping a ghost town.

And do not try to sell on Sunday. Nobody’s adding inventory on getaway day. At the 2023 National, we tried to move a Bobby Witt Jr. rookie numbered to 10. The best offer we could get was 65% of comps. We passed and took it back home.

Sunday is for buying. Full stop.

Everything Is Negotiable

This is the part that gets first-timers, so we’re going to be blunt about it.

Booths at the National start with inflated sticker prices. More inflated than at your local show, more inflated than at a regional. That’s the game. The number on the toploader is an opening bid, not a price.

Negotiating isn’t optional. It’s the transaction. Either you’re bringing the price down or you’re getting more cards thrown into the deal, but you’re doing one of the two.

Which only works if you know what the card is actually worth.

Last year, we picked up a 2017 Bowman Aaron Judge rookie and a Bryce Harper prospect card for $50 total. We walked away feeling like we’d robbed the guy.

Then we got home and comped them. The Judge was worth $30. The Harper was worth two dollars.

We didn’t get robbed. We just didn’t do our homework, and the homework takes ninety seconds. Know what you’re hunting before you walk in, and pull up comps on your phone before you shake on anything. The name on the card is not the value of the card.

Cash is king, same as any card deal. Plenty of booths take Venmo. We keep a card on us for the bigger vendors like Blowout, but for the dealer tables, bring paper.

Two Things We Can’t Help You With

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the show runs Trade Night from 6:00pm to 11:00pm.

We’ve never gone. So we’re not going to pretend to have a take on it. If you’ve done it and it’s worth the extra hours, tell us, because we’d like to know before we get to Rosemont.

Same goes for the Autograph Pavilion. Tristar runs a signing lineup deep enough that it’s practically a convention inside the convention, and you could burn an entire day in there without touching the show floor. That’s just not why we go. If autographs are your thing, budget a full day for it and plan the rest of your trip around that, because it will eat one.

So How Would We Do It?

We’re not going to hand you a single right answer, because the right answer depends on what you’re chasing.

But if you’re coming to your first National, we’d say go two days, and make Friday one of them. Friday gives you the most complete version of the show at the lowest cost in lines. That’s the anchor.

Then pick your second day based on your goal:

• Chasing bargains? Add Sunday. Get there when doors open.

• Selling cards or digging through dollar bins? Add Thursday.

• Want to see the hobby at full volume? Add Saturday, and skip the corporate lines.

• Going every day? Wednesday is free reconnaissance. Use it.

The National is overwhelming by design. There’s more floor than any one person can cover in one day and more temptation than any one wallet should absorb. The collectors who come away happy aren’t the ones who saw everything.

They’re the ones who knew what they came for.

Which brings us to the awkward part. We’d love to take our own advice here. But we couldn’t get Friday off work, so we’ll be doing this the hard way, on the busiest day of the show, with everybody else.

Do as we say. Not as our PTO allows.

So we’re doing a little of everything in one day. Corporate booths we told you to hit on Friday. Dollar bins that ten thousand people got to first. Dealer tables at peak volume, with no leverage and no second chance to come back tomorrow. We’ll report back on how much of our own advice survives contact with a Saturday floor.

ESPN has taken to calling it “The Skubal Deadline,” and they’re not wrong. Every rumor cycle between now and August 3 runs through Detroit. And every collector holding, watching, or hovering over a Tarik Skubal card is asking the same thing: do we buy before he moves?

The instinct is baked into the hobby at this point. Star gets dealt to a contender, card spikes, you cash in on the announcement. Buy the rumor, sell the news. It’s conventional wisdom, and conventional wisdom gets repeated so often that nobody actually checks it.

We wanted to check it. Two questions, specifically. Does a card really pop after a deadline trade? And if it does, is there a buying window that makes the flip consistently profitable?

Six trades. Three sports. One card each, tracked from the first whisper of a rumor to the final out of the season.

Let’s rip in.

How We’re Testing It

We picked six big-name deadline trades across baseball, basketball, and football. For each traded star, we grabbed one of their more liquid rookie cards and pulled the PSA 10 price at four moments:

• Pre-rumors: about two months out, before anybody’s really talking.

• Before the trade: the last month, when the rumors are everywhere.

• After the trade: the first 30 days once the deal is official.

• Rest of season: average price from the trade through the new team’s final game, whether that’s a deep run or a quick exit.

If the trade really is the optimal sell point, the highest average price should show up in that after-the-trade window. And if a proper buying window exists, it would show up consistently in the same spot.
