Our gut told us that 2026 Heritage Football was more of a Flip than a Rip. As a product, Heritage is solid, with decent long-term value for base cards as well as its major chases. It’s the 2026 NFL rookie crop that’s dragging this down.

The odds dropped early this morning, so now we have to tie up a few loose ends.

How tough will it be to pull autos? Where’s our best shot at pulling one of the Walter Payton redemptions? Are the published odds going to change our mind about Hobby Boxes being the Most Valuable Format?

Let’s rip in.

What the Numbers Say

Heritage is a relatively simple product. As an homage to vintage collecting, it probably should be.

Base Card Parallels

The parallel lineup isn’t as crazy as what you’d see coming out of a release like Flagship. Every format does have its own exclusives, but instead of an exclusive texture with its own rainbow of parallels, Heritage uses exclusive colors. Each format has an exclusive paper color and an exclusive chrome color. Hobby Boxes are also the only home for Flip Stock image variations.

For the non-exclusive parallels and variations, retail formats have the lowest expected spend, with the majority of parallel types better pulled from Mega Boxes and Value Boxes.

If you’re hunting base chrome, Fat Packs are the way to go with an expected spend of $13.98 per card. That’s nearly a third of the cost of pulling the same card from a Hobby Box.

Other than its exclusives, Hobby ranks dead last for all parallels and variations.

Let’s zoom out a little. When you look at Heritage strictly by the number of parallels and variations per box, the numbers look a little different.

Hobby, by far, gives you the most, averaging over 22 per box. That’s almost double the next best format, the Mega Box. But on the secondary market, Hobby Boxes jumped from the launch price of $140 to $250. Does that bulk justify the whopping price tag? Not quite.

Fat Packs actually come in at the lowest dollar per parallel/variation. They average 1.7 per pack, so you’ll probably pull one of the exclusive parallels, plus you have a good chance to pull another (probably a base chrome).

Numbered cards are going to be pretty tough pulls for a product Topps promotes as being widely accessible. There are no guarantees, even in a Hobby Box, that you're going to pull one. It's basically a tie between Value Boxes and Mega Boxes for lowest dollar per numbered card.

Inserts

If you’re buying a box of Heritage, you’re probably not in it for the inserts. All inserts are pretty common, with no case hit in the bunch. There’s only one insert parallel, and it’s a Hobby exclusive.

One thing to note right away. The odds sheet only listed The Expansion insert’s holo parallel. It’s possible that this is a mistake and there’s a base Expansion insert as well.

Of the base inserts, Fat Packs have the lowest expected spend. The general pull rates back that up.

Autos & Relics

Here's the real meat and potatoes of a product like Heritage.

The Real One Autos are some of the more sought after in the hobby, especially the Red Ink variations. This year, it looks like Topps really wanted to juice the Hobby Boxes with the Red Ink Real Ones. So much so that pulling a Veteran Red Ink out of Hobby is actually easier than pulling the standard version.

The base Real Ones, both Rookies and Veterans, are spread more across retail formats. You get more bang for your buck hunting for Veteran Real Ones out of Fat Packs. For Rookies, Mega Boxes have the cheapest expected spend, but Value Boxes are right behind them by a difference of around $50.

For the new Heritage Rookie Autographs, Value Boxes look like the best place to go, but their parallels are better pulled out of Hobby.

The other grand prizes in ’26 Heritage Football are the Walter Payton rookie card redemptions and cut signatures. The Cut Autos are Hobby exclusives. The rookie card redemptions are spread across every format, but Hobby Boxes are still where it’s at if you’re rolling the dice for one of those.

Looking at the bigger picture, Topps has absolutely loaded Heritage Football with more autos than we’re used to in the Baseball flavor. There’s an auto in every 3.8 Hobby Boxes, compared to the 1 in 8 we saw in the Baseball release earlier this year. Value Boxes went from an auto in every 73 boxes down to 1 in every 26.7. Fat Packs went from 1 in 453 down to 1 in every 106.4.

This is where the jacked-up prices on the secondary market really come into play. Even with a guaranteed auto or relic in every box, Hobby Boxes don’t have the best dollar-per in either category. In autos, they’re dead last at $940 per. If they were still at today’s $140 launch price, they’d be first at $526 per auto.

That price hike makes Mega and Value Boxes the better places to go for autos in general. For relics, it's the Mega Box all the way.

Popular Chase Cards

At current pricing, here’s where the lowest average spend lands for the most popular chases:

Base Chrome — Fat Packs
Chrome Parallels — Mega & Value Boxes
Image Variations — Mega & Value Boxes
Inserts — Fat Packs
Chrome Autos — Hobby Boxes
Real One: Veterans — Fat Packs
Real One: Rookies — Mega Boxes
Red Ink Real Ones — Hobby Boxes
Heritage Rookie Autos — Value Boxes
Walter Payton Redemptions & Cut Autos — Hobby Boxes

These rankings will shift as sealed pricing adjusts.

The odds stay fixed. The market doesn’t.

Most Valuable Format?

If prices hadn’t shot up, the MVF would be Hobby Boxes in a heartbeat. But that $250 price tag on the secondary market makes us pump the brakes and ask, “Is it really worth it?” Hobby doesn’t guarantee an auto or a numbered card. But neither does any other format.

Inserts in this product are a non-factor for us. There’s no evidence that they’ll have any kind of long-term value, so we’re not even looking at them here.

We were surprised to see where the auto value landed from the dollar-per-auto standpoint. Hobby Boxes lit the Index up bright green almost the whole way down the autos section. But here’s the thing. Hobby is better at pulling the ultra-rare cards, while all of the common autos are better pulled from elsewhere. That tips the dollar-per out of Hobby’s favor.

There wasn’t a single format that dominated this time around, but when you zoom out and look at expected pulls, the picture becomes a little clearer.

Mega Boxes are looking like the winner from this angle. They have the cheapest dollar-per auto, relic, and numbered card. Plus the second-best spend for parallels and variations.

In our Wax Watch, Hobby was the format we recommended to buy and hold. Looking at the odds and value within, we’d actually rather buy two or three Mega Boxes to hold instead. Hobby is just too steep right now to justify.

If you’re only focused on pulling autos and want to rip right now, there’s an argument to be made for Value Boxes. But since we’re more focused on holding some wax to flip at a later date, we’re more than fine patiently waiting for the Megas to drop on November 4th.

The odds changed where we’d buy. They didn’t change how we feel about this rookie crop.

👉 Verdict: Flip
🏆 Most Valuable Format: Mega Boxes
