Welcome to Wax Watch — The Hobby Wire’s quick-hit preview of upcoming releases before they hit shelves. We break down what it is, who you’re chasing, and whether it’s worth ripping, stashing, scooping singles, or skipping altogether.

Heritage hasn’t put out a football set since 2015. That’s changing tomorrow.

2026 Topps Heritage Football marks the brand’s return to the gridiron, and it’s bringing a classic with it. This year, Topps is recreating 1976 Topps Football, the set that gave us the iconic Walter Payton rookie card.

But what else does Heritage Football have to offer?

Let’s rip in.

Heritage has only made a few brief appearances in football. It debuted in 2001 with the 1956 Topps Football design as part of Topps' 50th Anniversary lineup, then popped up again in 2006 with the 1952 Baseball design. Then it went dark. A small, 100-card autograph edition in 2015 was the last we saw of Heritage Football.

Now that Fanatics/Topps is back on the NFL license, we’d bet they’re trying to make it more of a mainstay this time around.

Heritage is about as basic of a set as they come. Tons of vintage base cards of modern stars, without a huge variety of inserts backing it up. It generally prints on a more vintage card stock, so the cards should feel as old as they look.

It sounds like Topps put a lot of thought into this one. The team cards were rebuilt essentially from scratch, right down to imitating the way vintage printers offset colors and let ink bleed.

This year’s base set clocks in at 400 cards: 249 veterans, 100 rookies, all 32 team cards, League Leaders, Record Breakers, and cards for both conference championships and Super Bowl LX.

Every card in the base set also gets a Chrome version. But just like recent releases of Heritage Baseball, don’t go looking for a serial number on the back. It doesn’t feel like Topps is going back to numbering the base Chrome parallels. They’re printing too many now. Just know that these cards could hold less long-term value than the numbered Chrome of earlier Heritage releases.

Topps is pitching this release to set builders, vintage fans, and collectors who remember the earlier runs. Topps Ripped labels it “Accessible,” meaning it’s widely available and affordably priced (at least it’s supposed to be).

Chase Cards to Know

Left to Right: Jadarian Price Gold Heritage Rookie Auto /50, Walter Payton 1976 Topps Rookie Card, Jalen Hurts Chrome Autograph Variation

The Real One Autographs are the anchor of this product. They’re tougher pulls than an auto from your standard Flagship or Chrome release. The veteran list runs 39 deep, with names like Josh Allen, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye. A separate 45-card Real One Rookie Autographs list brings in all the hottest rookies from the ’26 Draft.

The Walter Payton Rookie Redemptions are the wild card. Topps is seeding 34 redemptions for real, graded 1976 Topps Payton rookies, from a single PSA 10 down to thirteen PSA 6s, plus five Payton Cut Signatures. It’s a fun chase, but the odds of pulling one are going to be astronomically slim.

Heritage Rookie Autographs put 36 rookies on a retro design, with Gold parallels numbered to 50. Short-printed Base Chrome Auto Variations, Locker Room Auto Relics, and Bicentennial Relic Autographs round out the hits. That last one is a 1976 tie-in featuring Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, Thurman Thomas, and the top rookies.

Talent Watch

These prospects are driving nearly all of the hobby interest in this checklist.

Six weeks into the NFL season, this class has been pretty quiet.

Fernando Mendoza, QB - Las Vegas Raiders
2026 Stats: 48 Pass YDS • 0 TD • 0 INT (1 game)

A Heisman and a national title in the same season, and he did it from the pocket. Mendoza is on time, makes the right read, and processes fast. The catch is patience: Kirk Cousins is still the starter in Vegas. Whenever Mendoza gets the keys, this is the guy everyone in the hobby will be chasing.

Jeremiyah Love, RB - Arizona Cardinals
2026 Stats: 245 Rush YDS • 1 Rush TD • 1 Rec TD

The most explosive player in the draft. Love set Notre Dame's single-season touchdown record and projects as a three-down back who can catch it out of the backfield. The left ankle is looking like a problem, though. It's kept him from planting and cutting, and Arizona sat him last week against the Rams.

Carnell Tate, WR - Tennessee Titans
2026 Stats: 29 REC • 344 YDS • 1 TD (6 games)

Tate is a big-bodied receiver with strong hands who wins contested balls, and Sunday he caught his first NFL touchdown in Tennessee's first win of the year. The Titans are 1-5, but when this very young team needs a play, the ball has been going to him.

Jordyn Tyson, WR - New Orleans Saints
2026 Stats: No regular-season snaps (Injured Reserve)

On tape, Tyson separates as well as anyone in this class and is dangerous after the catch. The issue is all we've seen so far is the tape. A preseason hamstring injury has kept him off the field all year, and he can't return until Week 9.

Ty Simpson, QB - Los Angeles Rams
2026 Stats: No regular-season snaps

Simpson waited three years as the backup at Alabama, then made the most of one season as a starter. He has clean mechanics, a quick release, and makes very few mistakes. The deep ball is the knock. The bigger surprise is the depth chart, where he's the emergency third QB behind Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett. This is a 2027 or 2028 bet, not a 2026 one.

💰 Box Breakdown

Not all boxes are created equal, especially at these prices. Here we lay out the formats, the price for each, how many cards come in a box, and the resulting $/card.

Hobby Box: $249.95 / 160 cards per box → $1.56 per card (Up 92% from MSRP)
- 1x Autograph or Relic per box
- Exclusive Dark Gray Border, Flip Stock, and Black Border Parallels, Exclusive Light Blue Sparkle Chrome Parallels
Fat Pack: $6.99 / 20 cards per pack → $0.35 per card
- Exclusive Dark Yellow Border Parallels, Exclusive Aqua Sparkle Chrome Parallels
Blaster Box: $24.99 / 64 cards per box → $0.39 per card
- Exclusive Dark Green Border Parallels, Exclusive Pink Sparkle Chrome Parallels
Mega Box: $49.99 / 136 cards per box → $0.37 per card
- Exclusive Red Border Parallels, Exclusive Silver Sparkle Chrome Parallels

For wide releases, we try not to pay more than $2.00/card for Chrome or $1.00/card for paper. The idea is simple: we don’t want to pay so much per card that we can’t at least break even. Heritage is a paper product at its core, so we’re holding it to $1.00.

Fat Packs have by far the best dollar-per-card of this year’s release at $0.35, less than a quarter of the cost per card of a Hobby Box. Every retail format clears the bar with room to spare.

Hobby is the only format over the line. That $249.95 is Steel City’s presale price, nearly double the $129.99 Topps charged at preorder. But it’s also the only format with a guaranteed hit.

Like Heritage Baseball, every retail format is getting its own exclusive pair: one border parallel and one Sparkle Chrome color. Hobby gets four.

For those who are chasing the biggest rookie color matches:

Fernando Mendoza collectors should look for Hobby Black Borders or Mega Silver Sparkles.
Jeremiyah Love matches with the Mega Red Border.
Carnell Tate and the Titans go with the Hobby Light Blue Sparkle.
Makai Lemon lines up with the Blaster’s Dark Green Border.
Ty Simpson and the Rams match with the Fat Pack’s

🎯 Verdict: Rip, Flip, or Skip

At The Hobby Wire, we like to keep it simple.

Rip → The checklist, price, and excitement all line up. Bust down the door.
Flip → Solid class, but prices are too high to rip comfortably. Buy singles on the players you want. For wax, grab a box or two to sit on and sell in a year or two once the rookie class starts to prove itself.
Skip → Junk Wax. Hard pass. Overpriced, overproduced, or saddled with a weak class.

Here’s the thing about Heritage. Be prepared to rip through a ton of base cards. While that’s a big negative for a product like Flagship, it isn’t as bad here. The vintage stock makes Heritage base a lot harder to grade, which keeps PSA 10s scarce. So if you find yourself a potential gem of one of the good rookies, sending it in might not be a bad idea.

Between that and the Real One Autos, Heritage is a simple product, but the chases are decent.

But the rookie class is what kept us from picking up some Hobby Boxes on preorder last month. On resale alone, that one stings. As a rip, it still looks like the right call six weeks in. None of these rookies look particularly strong. If there’s anyone we’re keeping our eye on, it’s Mendoza, but he’s been riding the bench all season with 48 pass yards to his name. That makes him more of a singles play than a reason to stock up on wax.

So we’re calling this a Flip. We’d recommend picking up singles of the rookies you like after a few months of the product being out. Post-release hype will fade.

Traditionally, Heritage Hobby Boxes are the better buys of the release. The hobby knows this, and the secondary market is already pricing it in. At secondary prices, we’d sit back, at least until the odds come out and we can see our chances at an auto.

If you wanted to buy a Hobby Box to rip on release day while the prices are still good, we wouldn’t blame you. The Topps drop looks like it will sit closer to $140. But we think it would be insane to pay anything more than $160 for this type of product.

If you’re planning to buy and hold, Hobby is the format we’d recommend. Right now, it’s a great quick flip that almost doubles your money. Long term, it could go higher if the rookie class starts to pan out.

Once Topps drops the odds sheet, we’ll run it through the Wax Value Index and see if the math agrees. We’ll probably pick up a few of whatever retail format the Value Index points us towards.
